Anger: The Hidden Killer

Anger is a leading killer of love, joy, health, happiness, loving relationships, family harmony, success and prosperity. Anger is a destroyer of everything that we inherently desire ... everything that is good, lovely and fair.

Managing anger, anger management, controlling anger and expressing anger do not free us from anger. After doing these things, our anger is still repressed, awaiting something that triggers our anger.

Although we might get a superficial sense of release from expressing our anger, this does not free us from anger; this merely reinforces our anger.

Anger is associated with most illnesses and depression. Anger is the hidden cause of many deaths (including suicides), many accidents, and all violence. Also, anger is the hidden cause of many problems in sex and loving relationships. Anger is the killer of the life within us while we are alive.

Learn the truth about anger. Angry people erroneously think that other people make them angry. People and things outside ourselves do not make us angry. Triggering our repressed anger is not the same thing as causing our anger.

What troubles us, what disturbs us, what makes us angry is not what people do or say; what disturbs us and makes us angry is our reaction. We react the way we react because of the way we believe and think in our heart—because of obscure fear and deeply held false beliefs about ourselves.  Thus, the solution to our anger is knowing the truth that makes us free.

Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Anger is a troubled mind. Buddha let us know that anger is hell. "Hell" is a biblical idiom, meaning a troubled state of mind.

In a society where about 90 percent of the families are dysfunctional, it is safe to say that about 90 percent of the people have repressed anger. There is no genuine happiness and peace of mind where there is repressed anger.

Many people have had their repressed anger since early childhood.  They are not aware of their anger and do not realize that there is  anything unusual or abnormal about their state of being. They have no basis for comparison.

Most angry people brush aside their anger, thinking that their anger is natural and normal; thinking that everybody gets angry. Many people do not recognize feelings of frustration, irritation, and “being bothered” as anger.

Being bored is a mild form of anger. If you are bored, isn’t there something that you would prefer to be doing other than what you are doing? What's hindering you from doing what you would like to be doing? Regardless of the excuses and seemingly logical rationalizations, isn't it fear? Where there is anger, there is fear.

Let's face it! Most people are troubled with anger; most people are out of harmony with truth.

The natural, normal, desired state of being is inner serenity, peace, joy, love, and happiness, which we experience when we are in harmony with truth.

"As we think in our heart, so are we." — Proverbs

"It is done unto us as we believe." — Jesus

We are the only ones who can free ourselves from our anger. In the final analysis, we are our own best astrologer, psychic, therapist, guru, savior, and teacher ... if only we would be still, pay attention and listen to ourselves. Our destiny in life is a function of our thoughts ... not a function of the stars ... not a function of astrology.

Henry David Thoreau said: "It is what a man thinks of himself that really determines his fate." This is true; however, what most troubled, unhappy, angry people do is blame others for their anger, blaming others for their unhappiness.

And note that Thoreau said, "thinks of himself." The false beliefs that cause us mental turmoil and suffering are not false religious beliefs, our beliefs about money, and so on. Although false religious beliefs can deter us from embarking on the path to truth, the false beliefs that cause us the torment of hell are the false beliefs we hold about ourselves that are contrary to our true perfection; e.g., beliefs that we are not loving, not acceptable, that we are rejects, that we do not measure up, that we are inferior, and on and on and on.

It seems that the one thing that angry people resist doing more than anything else is look within themselves for the cause — and the solution — to their anger. Rather than looking within, angry, troubled people are more likely to do such things as: consult with psychics and astrologers (which has become a multi million dollars a year business); seek the services of psychiatrists, marriage counselors; read self-help books galore; take tranquilizers and antidepressants, and on and on and on … anything except seeking within, the only place they can find the solution to their anger, discontent—all their mental and emotional suffering.

Many psychiatric patients — those who can afford it — become lifers (people who get psychiatric help for several years). All the while, the only answer that will free them from their mental turmoil and suffering is within themselves … if only they knew how to be still, commune and understand with their heart.

Things that help us overcome our suffering seem to be glossed over; for example:

  • From Taoism we learn, “To the mind that is still, the whole Universe surrenders.”

  • From The Koran, the sacred book of the Muslims, we learn, “God changes not what is in a people, until they change what is in themselves.”

  • Moses said, “Sanctify yourselves.”

  • James (brother of Jesus) said, “Purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

  • James also said, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God … receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:5-21).

  • Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32) … free from the hidden cause of all mental turmoil and suffering … free from the false world of the ego.

  • Jesus also said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7: 7).

  • Jeremiah said, “Wash thine heart from wickedness [same thing as purifying our hearts], that thou mayest be saved.”

  • Buddha said, “Be ye lamps unto yourselves; seek salvation alone in truth. Those who shall not look for assistance from anyone beside themselves, it is they who shall reach the very topmost height.”

Modern day churches seem to purport to be teaching the Gospel that Jesus preached. However, if we pay close attention to what Jesus preached and what the churches are teaching, we realize that the Gospel that Jesus preached is glossed over.

Regarding therapy, Eugene T. Gendlin, author of the book, FOCUSING, states, “At the University of Chicago and elsewhere in the past fifteen years, a group of colleagues and I have been studying some questions that most psychotherapists don’t like to ask out loud.  Why doesn’t therapy succeed more often?  Why does it so often fail to make a real difference in people’s lives?  In the rarer cases when it does succeed, what is it that those patients and therapists do?  What is it that the majority fail to do? ... What is this crucial difference?  We found that it is not the therapists technique—differences in methods of therapy seem to mean surprisingly little.  Nor does the difference lie in what the patients talk about.  The difference is in how they talk. And that is only an outward sign of the real difference: what the successful patients do inside themselves.”

Note the part: “what the successful patients do inside themselves.” Let’s face it! To get to the roots of our anger and to be free from it — not just to manage and control it — we must retreat within ourselves to discover the truth that sets us free.  We must do what James said (mentioned above): “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”

We ask of God by doing what Jesus said to do: “Enter into your closet and shut the door.” We must retreat to that quiet place within alluded to by David the Psalmist as the “secret place of the most high.” We must be still and transcend the chatter of the ego; we must (in modern day language) listen to our heart, not our head. We must do what David the Psalmist said to do about 3,000 years ago: “Be still and commune with your own heart.”

We create our reality by our innermost thoughts. We know more about our deep down thoughts — our deeply held fears, beliefs and anger — than does any one else (including psychics, astrologers, therapists, and ministers) ... if only we would be still and pay attention.

A Real Possibility, a Real Probability, and a Choice

Here's a Real Possibility:

There is a likelihood that you will read some part of these pages and not like what you read and/or take a part out of the context of all that is written in these pages, and consequently, disagree and/or not read all the pages. You might read something that triggers your anger, and you might "throw the baby out with the bath water" regarding everything else I have said.

Here's a Real Probability:

In our troubled, fractured society — characterized by broken families, dysfunctional families, crime, violence, drug abuse, child abuse, anxiety, depression, psychological stress, tension headaches, and on and on and on — there is the probability that you have repressed anger.

There is a way of living that is completely alien to most people ... a way that is free from repressed anger, insidious fears, and deeply held false beliefs ... a way that is in harmony with love and truth ... a way that is FREE OF THE NEED TO APPEAR SPECIAL AND IMPORTANT(pardon my shouting) ... a way that is free from facades and pretending to be happy ... a way that is characterized by genuine love, joy, happiness and inner serenity ... a way that is honest, HUMBLE(pardon my shouting) AND TRUTHFUL.

You would never have known the taste of an apple had you not tasted one. You will never know the experience of perfect peace, contentment, and genuine happiness until you experience it. Without the experience, we have no basis for comparison.

We, our families, our society, our nation and the very world itself are in need of a healing, and healing begins with us.

God did not create anything that is not perfect. Healing is freeing ourselves of repressed anger, fears, and false beliefs — freeing ourselves of the fearful, false beliefs of our false ego self — and consequently, being free to enjoy our true perfect self.

All neurotic behavior evolves from insidious fears, false beliefs, and repressed anger … it is not transmitted through the genes.

All neurotic behavior brings suffering in one form or another.

Here’s a Choice

You have a choice of which course of action you take. You can choose love, joy, health, happiness, inner serenity and contentment ... you can choose heaven.

Or, you can choose a troubled mind ... troubled by obscure, insidious fears, deeply held false beliefs, and repressed anger ... and all the suffering, sickness, stress, struggle, strain, loneliness, unhappiness, restlessness, and discontent that this course of action entails.

Anger is a troubled mind … anger is hell. Heaven is peace, joy, and righteousness.  The Apostle Paul said, “The kingdom of God is righteousness, and peace, and joy” (Romans 14:17). You have the choice of heaven or hell … here and now!

Managing and controlling our anger do not free us of it. Regardless of how many times we count to ten, it does not free us of our repressed anger. Understanding our anger — knowing the truth that sets us free — frees us from anger.

Can you imagine? Can you comprehend what a peaceful, safe, loving, harmonious place this planet earth will be when the masses of people learn to free themselves of repressed anger, obscure fears, and deeply held false beliefs ... and consequently learn to love and be loved, to be happy, satisfied, and contented ... deep inside, what everyone wants? We have the choice.

Obscure, unwarranted fear is the hidden, subconscious cause of all repressed anger, all mental suffering, and unhappiness; it is the hidden cause of all psychological problems.

Wisdom and understanding lead to the discovery of the truth that sets us free ... free from fear and free from repressed anger and all that stuff in the subconscious mind that robs us of love, joy, health, happiness, and peace of mind.
