The Secret to Being Happy Everyone desires to be happy. A vast majority of people spend tremendous time, effort, and money trying to find happiness. People seek the help of psychics, psychiatrists, astrologers, counselors; they move from one church to another; they join cults and personal growth groups, and for the most part, they never really find what they are seeking; they are only pacified, not satisfied. Although it has been glossed over, the secret for finding happiness is in the Bible. Solomon knew the secret for being happy about 3,000 years ago. The simple, infallible secret for finding happiness is found in The Proverbs: § “Happy is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gets understanding” (Proverbs 3:13). § “Wisdom resteth in the heart of him who hath understanding” (Proverbs 14:33). § “Whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he” (Proverbs 16:20). § "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting get understanding" (Proverbs 4:7). We get wisdom and understanding by being still and communing with our heart. You need look no further for a way to find happiness; this is the simple secret to being happy. If you trust in your true spiritual self and abide by the truth — the wisdom — that proceeds from within, rather than acquiescing to the ego, you will be happy. We are happy when we are expressing life in harmony with truth, God and nature. In the language of Jesus, this is the same thing as doing the will of our Father, a prerequisite (according to Jesus) for being happy and having peace and joy … a prerequisite for enjoying heaven. To be happy, we must overcome the world of the ego. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulations, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). In me means through the truth teachings of Jesus. Thus, if we believe and do what Jesus said, we would be happy and have inner serenity, peace, joy and happiness. Speaking to the Pharisees, Jesus also said, “Ye are of this world; I am not of this world” (John 8:23). In our language, sometimes when Jesus spoke about the world he was speaking about the world of the ego. Jesus had overcome the world of the ego. We can too, if only we believed and did what Jesus said. The disciples of Jesus had over come the world of the ego. The thing that set the disciples apart from the masses is that they were believers and followers of Jesus. Speaking about his disciples, Jesus said, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:16). When we have overcome the world of the ego, we are as humble as little children, a prerequisite (according to Jesus) for enjoying the kingdom of heaven … a prerequisite for having inner serenity, peace, and joy and happiness. Fundamentalists erroneously interpret the above passage to mean that we will have tribulations while we are alive; however, if we are a Christian, then we will have peace and joy after we die and go to heaven. Jesus was speaking about the present, about overcoming the world of the ego and enjoying peace and joy now, not after we die. If we study and assimilate the most essential teachings of Jesus and other biblical teachers, we realize that the entire Bible is about peace, truth, love, and joy. If people really believed and did what biblical teachers taught, we would have peace and harmony within ourselves and throughout the entire world. I'm reminded of something that Robert Kennedy said: "Some people see things as they are, and ask 'Why?' I see things the way they could be, and ask 'Why not?'" The way the world could be begins with you and me. The way we could be is loving, joyous, happy, satisfied, and contented ... deep inside, the way everybody wants to be. When we as a society are the way we could be, in due time this world will be the way it could be ... safe, loving, peaceful, and harmonious ... heaven on earth could be like the heaven within, as the Apostle Paul described Heaven: "Peace, joy, and righteousness" ... the abundant life that Jesus envisioned for us. Being the way we could be begins with changing the deep-down false beliefs we hold about ourselves — beliefs that are contrary to our true perfection — and learning to love freely and unconditionally. When we change, our world changes. It all begins with us. In summary, Solomon let us know: “Happy is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gets understanding.” We get wisdom and understanding — we discover the truth that sets us free — by being still and communing with our heart … what David the Psalmist said to do about 3,000 years ago.
